'You Don't Own Me' PSA hits back at GOP in song

A wide-ranging group of women that included actresses and rock stars united for a new PSA released this week criticizing Republican Party policy on women's issues to the tune of Lesley Gore's single "You Don't Own Me."

"I recorded 'You Don't Own Me' in 1964," Gore said at one point in the video. "It's hard for me to believe, but we're still fighting for the same things we were then. Yes, ladies, we've gotta come together, get out there, and vote and protect our bodies -- they're ours. Please vote."

According to Jezebel, the cast includes Girls showrunner and star Lena Dunham, Rookie magazine founder Tavi Gevinson, actress Tracee Ellis Ross and former Sleater-Kinney guitarist and Portlandia star Carrie Brownstein.

The video points out that women made up 60 percent of the electorate during the 2008 elections, and its YouTube page included a denouncement of the policy plans set forth by this year's Republican presidential candidate, Mitt Romney.

"Mitt Romney and the Republican Party are determined to overturn Roe V. Wade," the summary said. "Romney has not supported equal pay for women (The Lily Ledbetter Fair Pay Act). Romney has vowed to defund Planned Parenthood. Romney has vowed to repeal the Affordable Care Act. Romney doesn't want health care to cover birth control. Romney says same sex marriage should be banned with a constitutional amendment."
