Nevada sheriff invokes Hitler in letter to governor announcing she won’t enforce new gun law

A county sheriff in Nevada has decided she knows better than the people of Nevada, and has declared she will refuse to enforce a gun background bill backed by the majority of Nevada residents, and signed into law by Governor Steve Sisolak (D-NV) last month, 3News Las Vegas reports.

“Nye County Sheriff Sharon Wehrly announced on Thursday that she considers the new law, which seeks to prevent gun buyers from avoiding background checks by obtaining weapons through unlicensed sellers, violates the second amendment to the U.S. Constitution.,” the station said Thursday.

Wehrly posted a bizarre, rambling letter Thursday letting the public know her defiant stance, where she invokes Hitler as a defense at one point.

‘In Germany prior to WW2 we saw Hitler place restrictions of the public’s right to bear arms,” she wrote in a letter Thursday. “Then we stood by and watched him seize the firearms,” she continued.

In response to the sheriff’s letter, Governor Sisolak’s office gave local media the following statement:

“My office and that of the attorney general are aware of the letters from multiple rural Nevada sheriffs regarding SB143. While the law will not take effect until January 2020, I look forward to working with Attorney General Ford and local law enforcement over the next several months to review ways to enforce this law, as is the case with all other Nevada laws that elected officers are sworn to uphold.”
