8-year-old shooting survivor says she'll spend the rest of her life being afraid

One of the survivors of Saturday's mass shooting in San Diego was 8-year-old Noya Dahan, who was hit by shrapnel as the gunman opened fire with an AR-15.

"My uncle, he was holding my hand. He was, like, grabbing me and stuff," said the girl. "And the person who was shooting, he was aiming at him. So he — it hit him and went like that, it hit me, too."

Shrapnel hit Dahan in her leg and just under her right eye. She said that at the time it didn't hurt, but after a while, it began to feel like a bad bruise. The shrapnel that hit her leg went through and exited as well.

"She talked about the fact that nobody she thinks should be doing anything like other, that we are all the same," said CNN reporter Sara Sidner. "We may pray to different gods. We may have different thoughts. But that everyone is a human being. She said that over and over."

Sidner noted that Dahan was clear that she no longer feels safe in the world and she would probably spend the rest of her life looking over her shoulder.

"That coming from an 8-year-old was really hard to take," Sidner said.

This was the 99th mass shooting of 2019, according to the Gun Violence Archives and two more have taken place since. The list is now at 101 mass shootings.
