Here’s why Trump won't stop the shutdown even though it’s backfiring

The partial government shut down has dragged on for seven days. Despite this, there seems to be no end in sight as President Donald Trump refuses to budge on his desire to secure billions in funding for a border wall.

Editor Ryan Beckwith explained in TIME that Trump is prolonging the government shutdown because he is a "stubborn fighter."

"By any normal political logic, the partial government shutdown should be long over by now," Beckwith wrote.

Polls show that Trump's popularity is tanking over the fight for his border wall, and he has been scrutinized for the government shutdown from all sides.

He added, "Results like these would have led most past presidents to call off the fight. But Trump’s intransigence is illustrative of his larger political philosophy, which has often hinged on performing for the Republican base rather than gauging the mood of the country."

Trump has not backed down from his border wall dream and even said that he would take the blame for the shutdown.

"Trump has also publicly embraced his role as a stubborn fighter for the Republican hardline," he wrote. "Under normal political logic, presidents facing a potential shutdown might attempt to pin the blame on the other party. Trump, instead, announced that he would be “proud to shut down the government” in front of TV cameras in a White House meeting."
