ACLU objects to school's plan to test every student for alcohol at prom

The American Civil Liberties Union of Washington said a high school's plan to test everyone at this year's prom for alcohol sounded like a "blanket search," which courts have ruled against.

The Seattle Times reported that every student at Lake Washington High School's June 4 senior prom would be tested for alcohol consumption. The principle of the school said there have been problems with alcohol use at every dance this year.

"Our view is that public schools shouldn't be searching or testing their students without any indication or suspicion that a student is doing something wrong," ACLU spokesman Doug Honig said.

"A blanket policy that treats every student as a suspect is not a good civics lesson in our society."

Honig said that he was not sure if the ACLU would get involved.
