Anti-Trump Republican Adam Kinzinger announces he will not seek re-election to Congress

On Friday, Rep. Adam Kinzinger (R-IL) released a video announcing he will not seek a new term to Congress.

Kinzinger is an outspoken anti-Trump conservative who voted for the former president's impeachment and one of two Republicans serving on the House select committee investigating the Capitol attack. He made clear that he is not ruling out a future run for another office.

"In this day, to prevail or survive, you must belong to a tribe," said Kinzinger in the video, acknowledging a major obstacle to re-election is his insurmountable odds of surviving a primary challenge by a Trump loyalist.

Kinzinger would have faced long odds had he decided to run again. In addition to the risk of a primary, Illinois Democrats passed a new Congressional map this week which would aggressively gerrymander Republican seats, giving Democrats a 14 to 3 partisan advantage and cutting Kinzinger's district out of existence.
