Aileen Cannon refuses to delay Trump trial — with a catch

Politico's Kyle Cheney reports that Miami Judge Aileen Cannon won't delay Donald Trump's classified documents trial — but there's a catch.

In a court filing Friday, Cannon said that she will reconsider the requested schedule for March 1 after more negotiation over classified discovery. For now, however, the May 20 date stands.

She said that she understands criminal proceedings make things more complicated for Trump to be ready for his Florida trial. She said, however, it was "less important at this stage."

Cannon wrote that due process requires Trump have more time to review documents from the prosecutors, but for now, she'll keep the May 20 date to ensure it is "balanced against the public's right to a speedy trial."

Guardian reporter Hugo Lowell writes on Twitter that Cannon's actions in this case will nonetheless likely lead to delays in the start of the case.

"Judge Cannon might have only explicitly pushed back some pre-trial CIPA deadlines in the classified docs case — but this will surely have the effect of pushing back the entire *sequential* CIPA timetable, and ultimately delay the trial date itself," he explains.
