Alabama cop busted after choking wife and smashing car in off-duty gun-wielding rampage

A police sergeant in Montgomery, Alabama has been arrested and placed on leave after allegedly assaulting his wife and a man she was driving with, the Montgomery Advertiser reports.

According to the report, Montgomery Police Department's Sgt. James Stewart has been charged with menacing, a misdemeanor, after being accused of stopping a car that his wife was riding in, pointing a gun at the man driving the vehicle, "smashing his gun against a car window and ripping the car's door handle off while off duty." He was arrested on September 17.

The initial report filed by the man driving the car (whose name was redacted from court documents the Advertiser acquired) also alleged domestic violence. The man driving said Stewart "grabbed [his wife] by the throat" and "threw her against the front fender of the car."

Montgomery County Sheriff's Office Capt. George Beaudry told the Advertiser that they found no evidence of domestic violence.

"(Stewart) exited his vehicle with a gun and ordered me out of the vehicle," the unnamed man's complain reads. "He then tried to open the locked driver's door and said, 'Get out of the car or I'm going to shoot you.'"

He then allegedly "pointed [his gun] at [the man's] head and chest."

After his arrest for menacing, Stewart was released after paying a $500 bond.
