Alabama Republican thinks teachers shouldn't be armed — because most of them are women

An Alabama Republican announced his opposition to President Donald Trump's suggestion that teachers should be armed — because he doesn't think that the majority-female profession can handle guns.

The Birmingham News reported Thursday that state Rep. Harry Shiver (R) thinks most women are "scared of guns," and therefore can't be expected to properly use them in the classroom.

When discussing a bill on the floor of the state House that would, like nearby Florida, allow trained teachers to bring firearms onto school grounds to use in the case of emergencies, Shiver told the News that many female educators simply do not want to undergo the training.

"I'm not saying all [women], but in most schools, women are [the majority] of the teachers," Shiver said. "Some of them just don't want to [be trained to possess firearms]. If they want to, then that's good. But most of them don't want to learn how to shoot like that and carry a gun."

The bill passed the Public Safety Committee on which the lawmaker sits, and he vowed to abstain from voting for it when it comes to a full House vote.
