‘Amateur hour with nukes at stake’: Senator slams Trump’s reality TV diplomacy as North Korea talks abruptly end

On Thursday, President Donald Trump ended talks over de-nuclearization with North Korean dictator Kim Jong Un without having reached a deal as promised.

Yet, the President claimed progress, declaring that the US and North Korea are "positioned to do something very special." Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said that there were no current plans for future talks.

On CNN Thursday, Sen. Bob Menendez (D-NJ) slammed Trump's efforts at diplomacy.

"Hanoi was amateur hour with nuclear weapons at stake," Menendez said. "The limits of reality tv diplomacy."

"I said well before the second summit that, in fact, the work of discipline, strategic preparation and diplomacy was critical if we were going to achieve any success here," he continued.

"Unfortunately that proved to be true. There was a lack of the strategic building towards understanding what the absolute North Korea position would be and whether or not it was possible to find ways to move that."
