Andrew McCabe blasts Trump’s 'wildly inappropriate' comments on coup — and worries his supporters will take them as a ‘call to action’

Former FBI Deputy Director Andrew McCabe blasted President Donald Trump's "wildly inappropriate" comments that cops and bikers and the military were with Trump.

Maher began the interview by noting McCabe also had an Irish last name and St. Patrick's Day was coming up.

"So if you're in the FBI, you can't get sh*tfaced, right?" Maher asked.

"Which means I have a good day coming up," McCabe replied.

"Right, first time in years," Maher noted.

The conversation then turned serious, as they discussed Trump's controversial comments.

"It's getting very close to saying, 'don't force me to have a coup, don't force me to start cracking skull.' Is that how you read that?" Maher asked.

"It's very disturbing and concerning," McCabe replied. "I think he may be overestimating a bit how much support he has from people in law enforcement and the military."

"But really Bill, the thing that concerns me the most about statements like that is not what he means, but what that audience actually hears," he explained.

"Which audience are we talking about?" Maher asked.

"Those folks who are looking for the dog whistle, the language -- they receive those wildly inappropriate and irresponsible texts and messages and statements," McCabe replied.

"And it concerns me how they interpret what they're hearing, do they see that as some sort of call to action?" he wondered.
