When she was running for the U.S. Senate post in Maryland, Angela Alsobrooks (D) aired a commercial calling for more people in higher office who live and look like her.
That difference became clear during her first week in office.
Politico reporter Andres Picon said that he was walking into the U.S. Capitol on Thursday morning while standing behind Alsobrooks.
"One security guard asked if she was there to see her husband," Picon said of the interactions.

Alsobrooks is a single mother.
It got worse when a second security guard "asked if she was a staffer," said Picon.
"There aren’t enough people in the U.S. Senate who live like, think like and look like the people they’re supposed to represent," Alsobrooks said in the campaign ad.
