Anti-LGBT group running ad calling trans women in women's bathrooms 'filthy, disgusting and unsafe'

An anti-LGBT group led by a former Republican party head is slated to begin running ads on Houston radio stations attacking transgender women, saying allowing them to use women's bathrooms would be "filthy, disgusting, and unsafe."

The New Civil Rights Movement  reports that the Campaign for Houston is spending $100,000 to air ads in opposition to the Houston Equal Rights Ordinance (HERO) which will appear on the ballot in November.

According to HOUequality, HERO would prohibit "discrimination on the basis of characteristics in City employment, City services, City contracting practices, housing, public accommodations and private employment."

Much like an anti-LGBT campaign in Arkansas last year that used robocalls from former reality TV star Michelle Duggar, the Houston radio ads focuses on bathroom usage to scare voters.

In the ad, which begins "no men in women's bathrooms," a woman claiming to speak for "all moms, sisters, and daughters" warns: "This ordinance will allow men to freely go into women’s bathrooms, locker rooms and showers. That is filthy, that is disgusting, and that is unsafe."

The Campaign for Houston is led by Jared Woodfill, an attorney and the former chairman of the Republican Party of Harris County, Texas.

The attack on HERO is not the first in an attempt to derail the ordinance. Earlier this month four pastors filed suit against Houston Mayor Annise Parker -- one of the first openly gay mayors in the country -- accusing her and "conspirators" of unconstitutionally rejecting valid petition signatures that would have repealed the city-passed ordinance which has subsequently been moved to the ballot after being tossed by the Texas Supreme Court.
