Anti-LGBT leader booted from college teaching job after 'joking' about trans bathroom access

Family Research Council executive vice president and retired Army Lt. Gen. William "Jerry" Boykin blamed outside pressures after he lost his adjunct faculty position at a Virginia college, WTVR-TV reported.

"I have been terminated from teaching at Hampden-Sydney College after nine years there," Boykin stated on his Facebook page. "The bottom line is that I oppose these so called '#‎Bathroom‬' bills that let men go into women's locker rooms, showers, and toilets and I have been very public about it."

Boykin, who worked part time at the college, attributed his firing to what he called a joke he made during a speech in March, stating, "The first man who goes in the restroom with my daughter will not have to worry about surgery."

Despite his stated opposition to trans-inclusive restroom statutes, he argued that he was not threatening the transgender community.

"I was referring to perverts who will use these policies to get into locker rooms with girls and women, and I object to that," he wrote. "My statement was meant to be humor and not a call for violence, which everyone in my audience understood as humor."

Boykin's organization is also listed as a hate group by the Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC) for its history of anti-LGBT rhetoric. The FRC's president, Tony Perkins, has accused President Barack Obama of being in cahoots with a "totalitarian homosexual lobby."

For his part, Boykin was caught on a hot microphone in 2014 telling a reporter from Israel that Obama was sending "subliminal messages" of support to both the Muslim Brotherhood and al-Qaeda. He was also caught saying, "The Jews are the problem. The Jews are the cause of all the problems in the world."

Last year, he criticized the idea of women serving as Navy SEALS, saying, "You cannot violate the laws of nature without expecting some consequences."

Hampden-Sydney released a statement challenging Boykin's account saying that his position, the Wheat Professorship, was meant to rotate between several instructors.

"It is inaccurate to suggest that General Boykin was fired," the statement read> "It is also an injustice to General Boykin’s service to Hampden-Sydney and its students. We are grateful for the contributions General Boykin made to our educational mission and the impact he had on our students. We look forward to the exciting contributions to be made by future Wheat Professors who will follow General Boykin in this distinguished role."
