Any other day this bad would destroy a presidency -- for Trump it was just Tuesday: conservative columnist

On Thursday, the Senate Intelligence committee issued a subpoena requiring Donald Trump Jr. to testify about his ties to  the Kremlin.

As Democrats weigh where to go next in the multiple probes related to improprieties by Donald Trump and his family members and associates, the Republican leadership has declared the Russia investigation complete.

Writing in the conservative publication The Bulwark, columnist Jonathan V. Last explains why regardless of the outcome, Tuesday was one of the worst days for the administration -- at the same time, disaster after disaster has become the new normal for Trump.

"The really worrisome takeaway from the Mueller Report wasn’t that Russia meddled in our election and favored Donald Trump. It wasn’t that Trump at the very least attempted to obstruct justice," Last writes.

"It was that the executive branch of government looks to be run by a bunch of incompetent people who have no real idea what they’re doing."

He cites a handful of examples that underscore just how dangerously incompetent the Trump White House is.

First, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and Trump bungled a threat against Iran by sending a ship deployment to the Middle East. As Last notes, the administration sent an email from the national security advisor to reporters about the Abraham Lincoln carrier strike group -- but didn't make anyone available to answer questions.

"This is how you wind up bumbling into conflict. I’ve said this a hundred times and I’ll say it again: Strategic ambiguity can be a valuable tool in certain game theory situations," Last points out. "But in military conflicts, strategic ambiguity is dangerous for the stronger power."

Last also notes that the release of the President's taxes appears inevitable. Given how much effort he's put into hiding them, it wouldn't be surprising if they contained some very bad information.

Then there were the revelations that Trump's former fixer, Michael Cohen, had helped Jerry Falwell Jr. hide from public view what appear to be sex pictures. Falwell Jr. endorsed Trump soon after that.

"I want to emphasize that all three of these stories broke yesterday," Last concludes. "You might think that this would be the single worst day of a presidential administration. But in the Age of Trump it is—literally—just another Tuesday."
