Arizona Republican accused of turning grade school visit into rant about young Iranian 'suicide bombers'

A Gilbert, Arizona man accused Rep. Matt Salmon (R-AZ) of leaving his daughter shaken following a visit to her charter school, KPHO-TV reported.

"The congressman chose to give an example of the current situation in Iran," Scott Campbell said. "[He] made some inappropriate comments about 'Do you know what a nuclear weapon is? Do you know that there are schools that train children your age to be suicide bombers?'"

Salmon allegedly made the remarks during a speech to second and third-graders at San Tan Charter School. The congressman has not commented on the allegation. The Hill reported that he is considering a primary challenge against Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) next year.

Campbell said Salmon showed "a terrible lack of judgement" during his visit, saying he needed to console his daughter.

"After school my daughter was very concerned and said to me she actually didn't even know what suicide was and was very afraid," he said.

Two years ago, Salmon told Tony Perkins, head of the anti-LGBT Family Research Council, that House Republicans were "the last bastion of freedom" in the party's efforts to block President Barack Obama's legislative agenda.
