Awkward: Trump's new Catholic liaison said he would bring 'further degradation to our culture'

The new "chief liaison" for Catholic outreach for Donald Trump's presidential campaign was part of an open letter ripping the real estate magnate's presidential campaign, Right Wing Watch reported.

Earlier this year, National Catholic Prayer Breakfast founder Joseph Cella was listed among a group of Catholic leaders who signed a National Review op-ed entitled "Appeal to our fellow Catholics," which urged conservative members of their faith to reject Trump's candidacy and support "a genuinely reformist candidate."

"Mr. Trump's record and his campaign show us no promise of greatness; they promise only the further degradation of our politics and our culture," the op-ed by Robert George and George Weigel stated.

The column went so far as to argue that the reality show host was "manifestly unfit" to be president.

"His campaign has already driven our politics down to new levels of vulgarity. His appeals to racial and ethnic fears and prejudice are offensive to any genuinely Catholic sensibility," it read. "He promised to order U.S. military personnel to torture terrorist suspects and to kill terrorists’ families -- actions condemned by the Church and policies that would bring shame upon our country. And there is nothing in his campaign or his previous record that gives us grounds for confidence that he genuinely shares our commitments to the right to life, to religious freedom and the rights of conscience, to rebuilding the marriage culture, or to subsidiarity and the principle of limited constitutional government."

But on Wednesday, Cella was announced as one of the top names among Trump's council of Catholic advisors, joining former Sen. Rick Santorum (R-PA), who failed to defeat Trump in this year's GOP primaries and Kansas Gov. Sam Brownback (R).

Right Wing Watch also reported that anti-abortion activist Marjorie Dannenfelser was announced to be head of Trump's "pro-life coalition," despite signing a letter published in January criticizing Trump's treatment of women.

"He has impugned the dignity of women, most notably Megyn Kelly, he mocked and bullied Carly Fiorina, and has through the years made disparaging public comments to and about many women," the letter stated. "Further, Mr. Trump has profited from the exploitation of women in his Atlantic City casino hotel which boasted of the first strip club casino in the country."
