AZ GOP lawmaker wants women 'to watch an abortion' before having one

Despite Arizona’s recent spate of bills that would reduce women’s access to abortion and contraception, a Republican lawmaker wants her state to go even further.

According to The Arizona Republic, State Rep. Terri Proud colorfully replied to one of her constituents in an email asking her thoughts on House Bill 2036, a bill that would ban most abortions after 20 weeks of gestation.

"Personally I'd like to make a law that mandates a woman watch an abortion being performed prior to having a surgical procedure,'" Proud said. "If it's not a life it shouldn't matter, if it doesn't harm a woman then she shouldn't care, and don't we want more transparency and education in the medical profession anyway? We demand it everywhere else."

"Until the dead child can tell me that she/he does not feel any pain - I have no intentions of clearing the conscience of the living - I will be voting YES."

The constituent described her reaction to the email as the "most inappropriate for someone who makes policy decisions for women in this state."

Arizona's House is also proposing bills that would strip Planned Parenthood funding and allow companies to opt-out of covering contraception in their health care plans.
