Benghazi commission chief has to admit hearing didn't turn up new information

Rep. Trey Gowdy (R-SC) hesitated when asked on Thursday night what new information his commission had gleaned after questioning Hillary Clinton for the majority of the day.

"I think some of Jimmy Jordan's questioning -- well, when you say new today, we knew some of that already," he said, referring to a fellow Republican committee member. "We knew about the emails. In terms of her testimony? I don't know that she testified that much differently today than she has the previous time she testified."

Gowdy's remarks came after 11 hours of questioning that saw the former secretary of state take down commission members.

Even Democrats on the panel like Rep. Adam Smith (D-WA) and Rep. Elijah Cummings (D-GA) criticized the hearing, describing it as an attempt to grill Clinton on strictly partisan grounds.

"We are better than using taxpayer dollars to try to destroy a campaign," Cummings said toward the end of the hearing. "That is not what America is all about."
