Bernie Sanders: We can't let 'Trumps of the world' use Brussels attack to excuse Islamophobia

Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) doubled down on his criticism of Donald Trump's response to the terrorist attack in Belgium during an interview with ABC host Jimmy Kimmel, the Daily Beast reported.

"At the end of the day, we cannot allow the Trumps of the world to use these incidents to attack all of the Muslim people in the world. That is unfair," Sanders said. "To imply that if somebody is a Muslim they're a terrorist, that is an outrageous statement."

The Republican Party front-runner immediately responded to the attack by renewing his advocacy for waterboarding. Kimmel pointed out that Trump's popularity increased after he made similar statements following the attacks in Paris last November.

"In times when we are under attack or our allies are under attack, it seems that Americans gravitate toward the candidate who talks the toughest," Kimmel said. "Why do you think that is?"

"I think people get afraid, and for good reasons. ISIS is a disgusting, barbaric organization," the senator responded. "We've seen what they've done in Paris, what they've done in Brussels. People are afraid of an attack in the United States. But I think what we have to understand is we're not going to undermine the Constitution of the United States of America in order to effectively destroy ISIS."

The interview was filmed hours before the evening's Democratic caucuses and Arizone primary, which saw Sanders lose in Arizona to former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton while also winning the caucuses in Utah.

"Have you acclimated to coming to L.A., where a year ago nobody knew who you were?" Kimmel asked. "Now, teenagers and young people are cheering you."

"It is a bit of a shock," Sanders replied. "But it's a good shock; I'll take it."
