Beto O'Rourke wins Democratic Primary in Texas after rejecting donations from super PACS

Rep. Beto O'Rourke (D-TX) will face Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) in November after winning the Long Horn state's Democratic primary Tuesday night.

Prior to taking office in 2013 representing El Paso, O'Rourke was a punk rocker-turned-businessman who sat on the El Paso City Council. He announced his bid for Senate in 2018, and did so specifically to unseat Cruz. In the interim, he repeatedly out-raised the Republican senator, garnering $2.4 million in donations in the first 45 days of 2018 alone without the help of large political action committees.

O'Rourke will become the first Texan Senate candidate to run on a pro-marijuana legalization platform, and is known for supporting LGBT and immigrant communities.

The congressman beat out Democratic candidates Sema Hernandez and Edward Kimbrough to win the party's nomination.
