Friday night on HBO's Real Time with Bill Maher, Maher laid into the "kids from white liberal homes" who have made the Kony 2012 video one of the fastest-spreading Internet phenomena to date.
"I know what all you college kids out there are thinking," he said, "You're thinking, 'Hey! Who turned off Jersey Shore?'" He attempts to make the viral video phenomenon a kind of teaching moment, reminding the perhaps overly-credulous Facebook and Twitter users who forwarded the story that the world is full of people who lie, and sometimes you should think twice before believing something you see on the Internet.
He also reminds viewers that raising awareness about Joseph Kony is only the first step, and likens it to voting for Obama in 2008. There has to be follow-through, the host says, and if people make Kony famous, but he isn't captured, then he wins.
