President Donald Trump has fired FBI director James Comey, CNN has announced.
Press Secretary Sean Spicer has issued a statement from the White House which we will post when it comes in.
You can read the letter sent to Comey from Trump below, saying the decision to terminate Comey was made on the advice of Attorney General Jeff Sessions:
Along with Trump's letter to Comey, the Washington Post also released letters to from Attorney General Jeff Session and Deputy Attorney General Rod J. Rosenstein about Comey.
"Based on my evaluation, and for the reasons expressed by the Deputy Attorney general in the attached memorandum, I have concluded that a fresh start is needed at the leadership of the FBI," Sessions wrote in his letter to the president.
Deputy AG Rosenstein's letter to Attorney General Sessions about Comey explicitly mentions the deposed FBI director's treatment of the investigation into Hillary Clinton's email scandal as his main reason for concern.
"I cannot defend the Director's handling of the conclusion of the investigation of Secretary Clinton's emails, and I do not understand his refusal to accept the nearly universal judgement that he was mistaken," the deputy attorney general wrote in a memorandum titled "Restoring Public Confidence in the FBI".
You can read all three letters from Trump, Sessions, and Goldenstein via the Washington Post.
