Brad Pitt, Angelina Jolie donate twice as much as Wal-Mart to Haiti

They may be the world's largest corporation by revenue but they certainly aren't the world's largest corporation by donations.

In fact, they aren't even as big a donor as a couple: Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie have together pledged to donate $1 million to support Haitian earthquake relief efforts. Wal-Mart has pledged $500,000 in cash and $100,000 in in-kind donations.

Hollywood power couple Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie donated $1 million to help Haiti recover from a devastating earthquake, and a host of celebrities took to Twitter to urge fans to dig deep for the impoverished island nation.

They were at the fore of a chorus of A-listers calling for help for Haiti that included Oprah Winfrey, Ben Stiller, Wyclef Jean and several others. George Clooney is planning to host a telethon on MTV on Jan. 22, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Pitt and Jolie earmarked their seven-figure gift to Doctors Without Borders, whose three hospitals in the Haitian capital were severely damaged by the 7.0 magnitude earthquake. With functioning hospitals crammed beyond capacity with injured quake victims, the money will go toward medical staff and equipment to build a 100-bed tent hospital with two operating rooms, The Associated Press reported.

"We understand the first response is critical to serve the immediate needs of countless people who are now displaced from their homes, are suffering trauma, and most require urgent care," Pitt said in a statement.

Wal-Mart, meanwhile, is giving $500,000 in cash and aid kits valued at "$100,000." In a release, the company said:

In response to the tragic earthquake in Haiti, Walmart operations around the world and the Walmart Foundation today announced a $500,000 monetary donation to Red Cross emergency relief efforts in Haiti. The company is also sending pre-packaged food kits valued at $100,000 to Haiti at the request of the Red Cross.

An earthquake of magnitude 7.0 struck southwest of Port-au-Prince, the capital of Haiti, on Tuesday afternoon, devastating the city and leaving thousands dead.

“At Walmart, helping communities is what we do every day around the world, especially in times of need,” said Doug McMillon, president and CEO, Walmart International. “Many of the markets where we operate in the Americas’ region are launching support campaigns, and we will continue to look for opportunities to provide much needed relief...”

“Our thoughts are with everyone who has been impacted by the devastation in Haiti, including the hundreds of thousands of Haitians who are our customers and our associates in the U.S. and abroad,” said Margaret McKenna, president of the Walmart Foundation. “We will continue to monitor the situation and look for additional ways that we can assist in the relief efforts.”

But is Wal-Mart really being cheap? Possibly: Even Bank of America, blasted for doling out big bonuses, has pledged $1 million. So has UPS. And home improvement leviathan Lowe's. Drugmaker Abbot Laboratories said they'd send $1 million in-kind support.
