'A bully and a bigot': Columnist brilliantly blows up myth John Kelly was the 'adult in the room' keeping Trump in check

With news that White House Chief of Staff John Kelly is leaving the side of President Donald Trump by the end of the year, cable pundits have spent the weekend praising the former Marine general for reining in Trump and keeping him from turning his worst instincts into horrific policies, much worse than what the president pushed through.

However, Mehdi Hasan, writing for The Intercept, begs to differ by comprehensively compiling a litany of abuses that occurred on Kelly's watch -- some, reportedly, at his own instigation.

With Hasan labeling Kelly as a "bully, a bigot and a liar for Trump," the writer bid him goodbye and good riddance.

Noting Trump lauded Kelly as "a great guy," the Intercept columnist said 'not so fast.'

"This 'great guy' will leave behind an administration mired in scandal, chaos and corruption; a president perhaps even more reckless and lawless today than he was when Kelly arrived for work at the West Wing on the morning of July 31, 2017," he wrote.

"Kelly, lest we forget, arrived at the White House from the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), where he had quickly and proudly built a reputation 'as one of the most aggressive enforcers of immigration law in recent American history,' to quote from a scathing evaluation of his six-month tenure in charge of DHS by the New Yorker’s Jonathan Blitzer," Hasan recalled.

"Why did anyone with functioning eyes or ears assume he would do anything different at the White House?" he continued. "Why did political and media elites pretend he would be a sober and moderate figure, a check or restraint on the president, rather than Trump’s nasty and brutish mini-me?"

Hasan then presented a comprehensive list of actions (along with informative links) undertaken by Kelly which occurred during the outgoing-White House chief of staff's "gaffe-laden, controversy-filled 17 months in charge."

"Let’s be clear: Kelly was never a 'great guy'; never the 'adult in the room.'" he summed up. "He was a bully, a bigot and a liar; as racist and reactionary as his soon-to-be former boss."
