BUSTED: Maddow chews GOP out for 'disgusting' fundraising letter disguised as collection notice

MSNBC host Rachel Maddow tore into Reince Priebus and the Republican National Committee on Friday for their latest attempt to solicit funds with dubious-looking correspondence.

"This is my opinion, but I think this is disgusting. And I think the Republican National Committee should stop doing it," Maddow said.

The letter in question, which was spotted in Virginia earlier this week, is designed to resemble a collection notice, with the phrase "Notice of delinquency" rendered in red capital letters on the envelope.

"This notice of delinquency has been sent to you because the Republican Party has contacted you multiple times to ask for your support of our 2016 campaign ... We need you to come forward today and send a contribution of $25 or more," the letter states, with Priebus' signature attached.

Maddow, who was alerted to the letter through her show's tip website for viewers, called it "the kind of sleazy tactic, honestly, that elderly voters are particularly thought of as being succeptible to."

"There's a special extra-hot place in hell for anybody who tries to scam the elderly -- let alone scare them -- even if it's not for some BS political reason," she said.

This is not the first time the RNC has used this fundraising tactic; in 2009, the conservative news site Red State printed an op-ed criticizing the committee for sending the fake notices under the leadership of then-chairman Michael Steele.

"Mr Steele, we are currently in a battle for western civilization–and the success of that fight depends upon the success of the United States, which, I believe, depends upon the success of the Republican Party," the op-ed stated. "You, and we, have a major responsibility. We sully our cause by deceptive tactics–especially deception practiced against our friends in this cause.
