BUSTED: Missouri nun caught smuggling cocaine in her heels -- and then tried to blame her internet lover

A Missouri nun was caught smuggling roughly two pounds of cocaine at an airport in Sydney, Australia and claimed she was tricked by her internet lover to carry out the scheme, the Sydney Morning Herald reported.

Denise Marie Woodrum, 51, belongs to the Adorers of the Blood of Christ, and after her divorce met another man online.

After going through customs security found two pounds of cocaine stuffed in the bottom of her heels.

Her lawyer, Rebecca Neil, argued that she had been tricked by a man she met online, who goes by the name Hendrik Cornelius. Neil said that Woodrum believed she was just bringing artifacts to the man.

“She was groomed to provide a financial gain for this person, Hendrik Cornelius, whatever person or persons it was behind this identity,” Neil said. “She went on this trip thinking she was bringing artifacts for him.”

Woodrum had multiple contacts with the man and Judge Penelope Wass said there was evidence that the nun was fully aware of her actions.

Wass called her story “inconsistent and unbelievable.”

“I am less than convinced by her explanation,” she said.

Prosecutor Ben Dunstan said that Woodrum was frequently traveling internationally and showed evidence of text messages that proved she was aware of the drugs.

After an officer asked her about the drugs, she responded: “Why, how much did you find?”

Her father said he was shocked to hear the news and said his daughter spent a lot of time online. “All of a sudden she met someone she talked to. She said she was going to be doing some traveling.”

Woodrum is currently in custody and awaits sentencing next month.
