BuzzFeed reporters who broke Cohen lying story 'may have been misled' by their sources: John Dean

Nixon-era White House counsel John Dean responded live on-air to the rare public statement made by special counsel Robert Mueller Friday night.

Through a spokesperson, Mueller said that BuzzFeed News’ report alleging specific details of how the special counsel learned that Donald Trump allegedly ordered his former attorney Michael Cohen to lie to Congress was “not accurate.”

Dean noted to CNN's Erin Burnett that he looked into the reporters who broke the story -- one of whom is a Pulitzer winner, the other he knows personally as a "careful reporter" -- and concluded that their sources may have led them down the wrong path.

"It sounds very terrible for BuzzFeed," Dean said. "I have a lot of faith in the fact that Mueller never puts out statements or rarely [does]."

"They are investigative reporters," the former White House counsel said. "They must have been misled by their sources."
