A top California lawmaker Wednesday urged her state to explore “every legal option” to bump former President Donald Trump from its ballot after Colorado’s high court issued its historic decision.
Democratic Lt. Gov. Eleni Kounalakis delivered this message to the California secretary of state in a letter Wednesday, one day after the Colorado Supreme Court ruled Trump was barred from the state’s 2024 presidential ballot under the 14th Amendment’s insurrectionist ban.
“The constitution is clear,” wrote Kounalakis. “You must be 40 [sic] years old and not be an insurrectionist.”
Kounalakis urged Secretary of State Dr. Shirley Weber to issue a quick decision as they face a deadline of Dec. 28, when they are slated to announce primary candidates.

The California lawmaker said she was spurred to act by the Colorado court’s interpretation of Trump’s actions on Jan. 6, 2021, when angry rioters stormed the U.S. Capitol.
“California must stand on the right side of history,” she wrote.
While the future of the Colorado decision remains unclear — Trump has vowed to appeal their ruling as early as next week — what remains clear is that its impact will ripple across the state and the nation.
In Colorado, the state GOP has threatened to withdraw from the state primary if the decision stands.
And legal experts believe Michigan, emboldened by the court’s ruling, might soon make a similar move to bump Trump..
