The Republican mayor of Piedmont, California, has resigned after posting angry messages on Facebook that attacked Democrats, Black Lives Matter and the transgender community.
SF Gate reports that Piedmont Mayor Jeff Wieler stepped down from his position and publicly apologized for Facebook posts where he described transgender people as "mentally ill" while claiming the Black Lives Matter encourages the murder of police officers.
“Black Lives Matter encourages cop killing,” read one of Wieler's messages, while others included, “Democrats are the plantation slave masters of today,” and "Transgenders are mentally ill."
In apologizing for the posts, Wieler cited the political environment being created by President Donald Trump, in which he felt free to spout off offensive rhetoric without facing any consequences.
"We have a president who has coarsened the national dialogue and made many people feel insulted,” Wieler said. “No matter what you think of his policies and programs, this is a reality that I and many other Republicans are coming to acknowledge."
Although Wieler has resigned as mayor, he is still keeping his spot as a member of the City Council until his term ends in 2018.
