California high school under fire for allowing science fair project questioning IQ's of African-American students

A California high school has found itself in the center of a major controversy after it allowed a student to submit a science fair project questioning the intelligence of African-American students.

According to the Sacramento Bee, the controversial project was put on display at C.K. McClatchy High School in Sacramento and it has outraged students and parents alike at the magnet school.

The reports states that the project was proposed as, "Race and IQ," with a proposed hypothesis of, “If the average IQs of blacks, Southeast Asians, and Hispanics are lower than the average IQs of non-Hispanic whites and Northeast Asians, then the racial disproportionality in the  Humanities and International Studies Program (HISP) is justified.”

According to the report, the project was put on display on Monday -- only to be removed Wednesday after the complaints flooded the school's administration office.

“I think that a lot of people, especially of color, are really hurt and upset by this,” explained Chrysanthe Vidal, a senior in the HISP program, before adding that student who created the project has a history of making racist remarks in class.

According to the report the project also included a quote from a 1904 tract called “The Essential Kafir” which argued that South African blacks were intellectually inferior to whites. The term “kaffir” is considered an an ethnic slur used to refer to a black person in South Africa, sometimes shortened to the "k-word" because it is considered offensive.

The Bee reports that the schools HISP currently has 508 students enrolled, including 12 African American students, 80 Hispanic students and 104 who are Asian.

“We’ve clearly not progressed as much as the students want to think we have,” said one freshman in HISP. “It’s just kind of shocking to think someone could enter into that program knowing that is what we are learning about and being so closed-minded.”
