California man gets death penalty for torturing 8-year-old to death because he thought the boy was gay

A man and woman convicted of horrific abuse that led to the death of a 8-year-old Palmdale, California boy have been sentenced.

The boys mother, Pearl Fernandez, 34, will serve life in prison without the possibility of parole. Her boyfriend, Isauro Aguirre, was sentenced to death, reports KTLA.

In 2013, Gabriel Fernandez was taken to the hospital with a cracked skull, broken ribs and B.B. pellets in his small body. Two days later, he died.

An investigation into his death uncovered years of abuse by Fernandez and Aguirre. It's alleged that Aquirre thought the child was gay.

“Every day, I wish I made better choices," Fernandez said at her sentencing. "I wish I could have saved Gabriel."
