10 terrifying images of the California fires — and how to help

The Santa Ana winds continue to make fighting fires in the Pacific Palisades more difficult. The strong winds on Tuesday forced fast evacuations that led to area panic.

For those looking for ways to help from outside the state here are some ways to donate: California Fire Foundation, The Los Angeles Fire Department Foundation, The Humane Society of Ventura County asked that folks refer to their Amazon Wish list and sent out an urge call for 40-gallon horse water troughs and horse electrolytes. Other groups helping folks locally include the LA Food Bank, The California Community Foundation’s Wildfire Relief Fund, and GoFundMe has verified some pages related to the fire victims.

CBS News National Correspondent Jonathan Vigliotti revealed that the winds were so bad on Tuesday that panicked evacuees were abandoning their cars on the road, believing they could flee faster on foot. The abandoned cars sprinkled on the roads made it difficult for fire trucks to make it to their target locations.

He heard meteorologists warn winds could reach as 100 mph overnight.

Retired NFL quarterback Chase Daniel posted a photo as he flew over southern California, showing the large swath of land being burned.

Bioethics and health policy writer Alex Pearlman was watching the fire make its way to her mother's house on their Ring cameras.

On Wednesday morning, Vigliotti captured footage of the buildings in the Palisades that burned to the ground. One of those is Pacific Palisades High School, which is most known for being featured in MTV's version of "Teen Wolf," some episodes of "Modern Family," the Lindsay Lohan version of "Freaky Friday," and the horror film "Carrie."

"The mall survived," he noted.

Theatre Palisades Pierson Playhouse was engulfed in flames, ABC7 showed on air.

Actor Steve Guttenberg stayed behind to try and help move cars that were abandoned from the evacuations, KTLA News reported.

Storm chaser Tanner Charles posted a photo and video of a friend's home in North Rustic Canyon where they tried to stop a fire from taking a home.

NBC News Los Angeles reporter Liz Kreutz posted a video of destroyed homes on the Pacific Coast Highway in Malibu.

FoxLA reporter Matthew Seedorff grabbed a garden hose and tried to stop a home from catch fire, but he was unsuccessful.

Meanwhile, Donald Trump ally Richard Grenell, who lives on the so-called "left coast," complained that the policies of Democrats were to blame for the fire.
