Canada announces 'Trudeau Doctrine' that ignores Trump and strengthens NATO

According to a report by Canada's Globe & Mail newspaper, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's response to President Donald Trump's spurning of NATO's Article 5 is to "wait out" Trump's presidency, and strengthen their relationships with the rest of their European and Asian allies.

In an address by Canadian Foreign Affairs Minister Chrystia Freeland, the post-NATO "Trudeau doctrine" aims to offer an anti-isolationist response to Trump's "America First" policy.

"Many of the voters in last year's presidential election cast their ballots, animated in part by a desire to shrug off the burden of world leadership," Freeland said, referencing Trump's November win. "To say this is not controversial: it is simply a fact."

"Canada is grateful, and will always be grateful, to our neighbor for the outsized role it has played in the world. And we seek and will continue to seek to persuade our friends that their continued international leadership is very much in their national interest—as well as that of the rest of the free world," Freeland said. "Yet we also recognize that this is ultimately not our decision to make. It is a choice Americans must make for themselves."
