Prosecutors have 15,000 hours of video evidence against Capitol rioters -- and that's not all

Federal prosecutors are overwhelmed by an avalanche of evidence against the U.S. Capitol rioters.

They've begun filing requests for 60-day delays in cases against Donald Trump's supporters who stormed the Capitol on Jan. 6 seeking to disrupt the certification of Joe Biden's electoral win, because there are so many defendants and so much evidence to sift through to determine what crimes were committed, reported Politico.

"The investigation and prosecution of the Capitol Attack will likely be one of the largest in American history, both in terms of the number of defendants prosecuted and the nature and volume of the evidence," wrote U.S. attorneys in a nine-page filing lodged Friday morning in multiple cases.

Prosecutors have gathered more than 15,000 hours of surveillance and body-worn camera video turned over by 14 law enforcement agencies, and investigators have executed more than 900 search warrants in nearly every state, and they're also examining more than 1,600 electronic devices and reviewing more than 210,000 tips and 80,000 witness interviews.

About 300 suspects have been charged, and at least another 100 will likely be added, according to the new filings.

The charges range from easily provable trespassing cases to complex conspiracy allegations against members of the Oath Keepers and Proud Boys, and authorities have suggested that highly serious seditious conspiracy charges could be possible.

Prosecutors said they would likely need to use outside vendors to sort through all the evidence and set up a system of review agreed upon by attorneys on all sides of the investigations.
