The Justice Department is moving toward a possible indictment of Cassidy Hutchinson, the former White House aide whose testimony became a centerpiece of the January 6 hearings, according to Punchbowl News.
Sources told the outlet that prosecutors from the department's Civil Rights Division laid out evidence before a federal grand jury this week alleging that Hutchinson "lied to Congress." No charges have been announced.
Republican lawmakers had earlier pressed the department to bring charges, CNN reported in March, and former Attorney General Pam Bondi reportedly pursued the case to try to save her job.
Hutchinson testified to the House Select Committee on January 6 over multiple days. Among her most striking claims was that a Secret Service agent told her Trump lunged at him in the presidential vehicle after the Ellipse speech, angry he wasn't being driven to the Capitol to join his supporters. She also alleged that Trump was unbothered by reports that some in the crowd carried weapons. Trump has long called her account false.
Any case would turn on whether prosecutors can identify a specific false statement. The report also flags the venue as a potential hurdle: federal court in Washington, D.C., hasn't been friendly territory for prosecutions brought by U.S. Attorney Jeanine Pirro's office.
The Trump Justice Department has gone after other critics of the president, including former FBI Director James Comey, New York Attorney General Letitia James, prosecutors who investigated Trump, law firms linked to his opponents, and news organizations. Reuters counted at least 470 targets of administration retribution by November 2025, among them 112 stripped security clearances. Several of those efforts have faltered in court.
Trump rejects the revenge label. As recently as Wednesday, he said he had the power to go after Hillary Clinton, Joe Biden and Barack Obama but hadn't.
