Catholic group makes its own 'It Gets Better' video -- for homophobes

A "patriotic" Catholic group released a video mimicking the It Gets Better LGBT campaign to cheer on religious conservatives fighting the legalization of same-sex marriage, Gawker reported.

"I know a lot of people who are gay," one man says in the two-and-a-half-minute video. "I have friends who are gay; I don't fear them, you know? They're wonderful people. I love them. What I do feel insecure about is speaking from the heart, and being really open and honest about what I believe."

The video, "Not Alone," shows various people "opening up" about their opposition to marriage equality. But instead of stating their position from the outset, the video begins by portraying them as being afraid to "come out" regarding their beliefs.

"I am a little bit nervous about people hearing that I am this way and thinking, 'She's not welcome here,'" one woman says.

As the It Gets Better campaign, which originated from a video by columnist Dan Savage, set out to encourage LGBT youth in the wake of several bullying-related suicides, the people seen in Catholic Vote's video depict themselves as victims.

"'Bigoted' is a huge word that gets thrown around," the man protests. "It's just not true." Another man complains, "You cannot have a society of hatred or a society of bigotry."

While Savage has not responded to the video, Out Magazine skewered it, describing Catholic Vote as an "up-and-coming comedy group."

"Their new sketch, 'Not Alone,' is absolutely hilarious and has already garnered over 500,000 views on YouTube," Hilton Dresden wrote. "Oh, what? The video isn't a joke? They had us fooled."

Catholic Vote describes itself on its website as "a community of patriotic Americans who believe our nation’s founding principles are good and true, and worth fighting for."
