'Change the whole conversation': GOP strategist urges Dems to link Trump's taxes to his business corruption

On Monday, Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin denied House Democrats' request for President Donald Trump's tax returns, violating a clear federal law that requires the IRS to furnish such information to Congress.

But while the legal facts are on Democrats' side, they need a winning message to rally the public to back their quest to review the president's finances, said Republican strategist Susan Del Percio on MSNBC's "Meet the Press Daily." And her personal suggestion: remind the public that Trump needs to prove he isn't abusing his office to enrich his businesses.

"I think the conversation around this needs to be streamlined a bit," said Del Percio. "It's like, why do you need his taxes? I think what the public just needs to know is that the president has not given up the right to be involved in his business. It is not in a blind trust. So he could be making money directly off of his time in office. Just stop it right there."

"I think everyone could get around that message, and it would change the whole conversation," said Del Percio. "If it was just more direct."
