A 2018 Second Amendment post by slain conservative commentator Charlie Kirk has gone viral again in the wake of the deadly Minneapolis shooting of ICU nurse Alex Pretti by federal immigration agents, drawing sharp reactions online and among critics of the MAGA movement. Kirk’s words — that the right to bear arms exists so people can defend themselves against a tyrannical government — have been widely circulated on social media as a rebuke to those defending armed civilians’ involvement in protests and federal enforcement actions, with commentators saying the quote underscores tensions and contradictions within the movement he once helped shape.
