Reacting to a piece explaining why Massachusetts will lower flags to half-mast until Sunday, one Democratic lawmaker balked at the reason for the tribute on social media.
Following an executive order from Donald Trump, flags were to be lowered to honor the far-right conservative Charlie Kirk, who was shot in the neck and died in Utah on Wednesday.
According to Heather Morrison of MassLive, “Gov. Maura Healey ordered the United States of America flag and the Commonwealth of Massachusetts flag be lowered to half-staff at all state buildings beginning Thursday until sunset on Sept. 14 due to the death of conservative activist Charlie Kirk.”
Linking to the MassLive notice, attorney Mara Dolan, who was elected to the Massachusetts Governor's Council in 2024, said there are very good reasons for the state to ignore the president’s order, which does not have the force of law.
On Bluesky, she wrote, “Massachusetts flags should not be lowered for Charlie Kirk.”
By way of explanation, she added, “He was not an elected representative of the people. He was racist, sexist, homophobic, and did not support Massachusetts values of equal justice and freedom.“
