Chicago families shaken by gun violence mark Mother's Day in the streets

A large group of mothers who've lost children to gun violence took to Chicago's streets on Mother's Day to create a public spectacle of their pain in hopes that policy-makers will take matters of gun control more seriously.

“If you lose your child, you never feel like doing anything [for Mother’s Day],” Clara Allen, who's son was killed in 2007, told The Chicago Sun Times.

About 50 participated in the march, including 20 mothers and members of Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America, which advocates for banning assault rifles and high-capacity magazines, implementing background checks for all gun buyers and letting the government track large ammunition sales.

Mother's Day kicked off a whole week of anti-gun activism for the group, which aims to have its members calling, writing and emailing members of Congress and spreading the word to other moms. Activists participated in at least 26 different marches around the country on Saturday and Sunday.
