Chief of Staff Reince Priebus had no idea Trump was hiring Anthony Scaramucci to be the new communications head

Anthony Scaramucci is taking over the communications team at President Donald Trump's White House, but it was news to Chief of Staff Reince Priebus.

According to an Axios report claiming the former Wall Street financier and frequent Fox News contributor is new to the team.

However, the hire, "came as a surprise to Chief of Staff Reince Priebus, who found out after the plans had already been made," Axios claimed.

"Scaramucci expected to be named comms director in coming days," New York Times reporter Maggie Haberman tweeted Thursday night. "Open question whether Priebus tries to stop it."

The two had run-ins in January when Priebus called Scaramucci and urged him to pull out of consideration for director of the Office of Public Engagement and Intergovernmental Affairs.

Priebus claimed that the White House couldn't wait to fill the post until the ethics review was done. Given his background, a process like that could take as much as three months, according to Politico.

However, press secretary Sean Spicer swore that Scaramucci was never even offered a position, to begin with, despite transition officials telling reporters that he was.

“It wasn’t announced,” Spicer said in an interview. “I never said that he had a job.”

Not long after, Scaramucci was back in and Priebus had to make another call.

“Reince is trying to cut someone who has a direct line to Trump,” a person close to Trump told Politico. “This is where Reince wants to throw down the marker, but he will lose this one.”

"He's not out; all they're doing is going through the [Office of Government Ethics]," Spicer said later. The head of the OGE stepped down this week and a replacement has not been appointed. "Until you're clear, you're not official. He's filled out the forms, the Office Government of Ethics has to review it. He completed a major deal. It's on par with these [Cabinet] nominees."

Haberman also tweeted that Scaramucci has a close relationship with Donald Trump Jr. Jared Kushner and Ivanka Trump reportedly like him and Trump appreciates how Scaramucci has defended him on appearances.
