'Pile on': Chris Christie says recent Trump decision means ex-president won't 'skate away'

Trump is likely going to take some legal medicine.

Former New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie is convinced that a decision on Wednesday hurts the 45th president's attempts to dodge the law be it civilly or criminally.

"It just continues to pile on his already existing problems," he told Wolf Blitzer in an appearance on CNN's "The Situation Room." "It means he's not going to be able to skate away from having to defend the civil cases in court."

A panel of judges affirmed in a release that the Former President Donald Trump can be sued for fomenting violence back on Jan. 6, 2021 in the hours leading up to the deadly attack on the U.S. Capital building.

Christie then lasered in on what he thought of Trump's actions on Jan. 6, 2021.

"Let's face it, it was not an official activity of his," said Christie, who is running for president and attempting to catch up to Trump's dominating lead in the 2024 contest for Republicans. "It was an activity of his campaign to try to stay in office after the election results had already been returned."

Christie agreed with the three judges' determination that Trump's role as president cannot prevent him from being sued over the issue, because he was not acting in his official capacity.

Trump's legal team tried and failed to push a narrative that as president he was insulated from lawsuits over the U.S. Capitol attack because he was in the capacity as president at the time.

On the day in question, Trump stood before a massive crowd for the rally and asked those in attendance to march down Pennsylvania Avenue toward the Capitol.

"We fight like hell," he said. "And if you don't fight like hell, you're not going to have a country anymore."

His defense lawyers point out that the president also tried to advocate for peace.

"I know that everyone here will soon be marching over to the Capitol building to peacefully and patriotically make your voices heard," he said.

But Christie contends that the entire purpose that day was to thwart the certification of the 2020 election to deliver the presidency to then-President Elect Joe Biden.

"It was an activity of his campaign to try to stay in office after the election results had already been returned," Christie explained. "He was attempting to stop the election results from being implemented."

"That is not an official action of the president. That is an action based upon his political campaign and I think the court made the right decision."
