Civil rights icon Dolores Huerta: Trump and his friends have 'taken off the hood' and we can see their faces

During a speech in Denver, Colorado, civil rights icon Dolores Huerta blasted President Donald Trump for being racist and a purveyor of hate.

“Now that Trump and all these people have taken off the hoods, the white hoods … we can identify them,” the 87-year-old activist and organizer said, in reference to hoods members of the Ku Klux Klan are known to wear. According to the Denver Post, Huerta went on to say, “we know who you are now. And that’s a good thing, because now we know that the racism is out there. And that means we can do something about it.”

The speech was part of a three-day tour in the area attempting to motivate people to fight back against racism along with a documentary called "Dolores." She along with César Chávez founded the National Farm Workers Association, the first organizing effort for farmworkers in the United States.

“I know it’s a statement that can incite many people,” Huerta said about Trump, “but I think it speaks the truth.”

While Trump called racism during the Charlottesville protests "evil," he went on to equate peaceful counter protesters with the white supremacists and Nazis. He blamed "both sides" instead of those who harmed or killed the counter protesters.

Colorado Organization for Latina Opportunity and Reproductive Rights executive director Cristina Aguilar, who moderated the discussion, said that she sees similarities with the discrimination during Huerta's first campaign and the U.S. today.

“We are seeing faces of the vitriol and the hate that have shifted the politics of this nation to where, effectively, many of us believe that we have a white supremacist as a president,” Aguilar told The Post.

“We can say to the alt-right and the neo-Nazis and the KKK: Get over it, you’re African, OK?” Huerta said to audience applause.

“Unless we teach that to our children, our kids of color will never ever feel that they have the dignity … and they will always feel like second-class citizens,” she went on to say. “And in terms of our Anglo children, well, we just don’t want to grow any more neo-Nazis, right?”

She explained that the reason she's following the film around the country is that she seeks to "implore people to please get engaged."

“It’s not just about voting," she said. "It’s about getting other people to vote.” In the midterm elections, she continued, “we can build our own wall of resistance in the U.S. Congress … to (block) whatever politics come out of the White House.”
