Louisiana Republican launches racist tirade against 'nastiest country' Haiti after lawsuit

Rep. Clay Higgins (R-LA) unleashed a bigoted attack on Haitian immigrants on Wednesday that drew swift blowback from many of his Twitter followers.

In a post on Twitter, Higgins attacked Haitian immigrants who filed criminal charges against former President Donald Trump and Sen. J.D. Vance (OH) for falsely accusing them of eating local residents' pets.

"Lol. These Haitians are wild," Higgins wrote. "Eating pets, vudu, nastiest country in the western hemisphere, cults, slapstick gangsters… but damned if they don’t feel all sophisticated now, filing charges against our President and VP. All these thugs better get their mind right and their ass out of our country before January 20th."

Many of Higgins' followers slammed him for pushing racist stereotypes about Haitians.

"In case you were still unaware, Clay Higgins voted for David Duke," wrote columnist Justin Baragona sharing a copy of an interview where Higgins confessed to voting for the famous white supremacist.

"Just a U.S. congressman mocking and demeaning Haitian immigrants, legally in the U.S., for filing charges against Trump/Vance for fanning chaos and threats targeting them.Nothing to uh, see here...?!" wrote Huffington Post reporter Jen Bendery.

Michigan's Jake McClory, a former Capitol Hill intern, called it "straight-up Neo-Nazi rhetoric."

Everytown senior director of communications Max Steele cautioned, "They're gonna say the word before Election Day."

Louisiana Commissioner Davante Lewis lamented the "@LAGOP federal delegation keeps showing that they will not take an opportunity to embarrass this state. @RepClayHiggins you are simply disgusting and should resign."

Retired journalist Ken Cox called the comments "exceedingly vile yet it goes unnoticed in the Trump era. Aren't Americans better than this bulls--t?"

Northwestern Religious Studies professor Brannon Ingram questioned on Tuesday whether the election could "possibly get any darker."
