Clinton surrogate skewers the GOP: Trump got picked because you think 'Duck Dynasty is a think tank'

Donald Trump refuses to help fellow Republican Party members in tough elections, namely House Speaker Paul Ryan (R-WI) and Sen. John McCain (R-AZ). Trump spokesperson Katrina Pierson claimed this was because Trump doesn't get involved in primaries, but Trump and McCain have been at each other's throats since Trump attacked McCain for "getting captured." Similarly, Trump's relationship with Ryan has been strained since Ryan wasn't sure if he wanted to endorse Trump before the Republican National Convention.

Trump supporter Kayleigh McEnany spoke on CNN about the ways in which the Republican Party and many of its establishment members worked against Trump and "disrespected" the voters who supported him. "Without Republican voters, the Republican Party won't exist," she determined.

"Without independent voters, no candidate is going to be a credible candidate for president," Clinton surrogate Robert Zimmerman replied. "Donald Trump succeeded in a Republican Party where 44 percent of them think the president is a secret Muslim. To that voter, Duck Dynasty is a think tank. Donald Trump still won't even recognize that President Obama is an American citizen. So, it tells you just how bankrupt Donald Trump is ethically and morally and also how dysfunctional, how extreme the Republican Party has become. That's the real issue here."

Historian Douglas Brinkley maintained that all rumors about Trump staging an election exit are nothing more than rumors. "Yes, we've never had a presidential candidate as unhinged as Donald Trump. Who wants to, if you want to call it speak his mind or speak his gut, but there seems to not be a filter there. Often when we think of someone who's president we think of them being a diplomat, having to do with world affairs and having to kind of filter their thoughts off. And Donald Trump is refusing to do that. That makes him an incendiary revolutionary candidate."

In the second half of the segment, host Carol Costello mentioned that Trump is already beginning to question the legitimacy of an election that hasn't even been held yet. He's claiming that things are "rigged" and rallying his base of supporters around the idea that if he isn't elected it was due to a conspiracy, not due to voters.

Trump's surrogate echoed the same sentiment, claiming, "CBS reported a few months ago that there are hundreds of dead people on the rolls to vote in Los Angeles. I mean, this happens every single election in elections that can come down to a few hundred votes as we saw in Florida with Gore and Bush."

Costello wasn't having it. "Just to clarify, in my mind, because facts do matter, a 2014 study by Justin Levitt at the Loyola Law School in Los Angeles found just 31 cases of voter fraud in 14 years," she said, emphasizing the 14 years. "So, Kayleigh, I'll just follow up, voter fraud has never been a problem in the United States."
