President-Elect Donald Trump has come under fire in recent days for mixing his businesses with the work of his future political administration.
Many have been critical of his daughter Ivanka sitting in on his meetings with foreign leaders, for instance last week when she joined Trump in a meeting with Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe. She also sat in on a call between the President-Elect and Argentine President Mauricio Macri on Monday.
Experts and media have questioned Ivanka sitting in on her father's political meetings, suggesting that having her working with both the Trump Organization and involved in political affairs is a conflict of interest.
On Tuesday's CNN Newsroom segment, host Brianna Keilar led a conversation with commentators Alice Stewart and Maria Cardona on whether Ivanka should be sitting in on the meetings.
Stewart, a Republican strategist, suggested that it's not news to anyone that Trump is running a business empire with "business interests all across the world."
Touching on one of Trump's campaign promises, Stewart said that his children would take over running his business and that they still had 65 days to figure out the logistics.
The question remained, though, whether his children should be involved on both sides. Cardona retorted that, yes, this is a time of transition for Trump, but it's also a time when he should be reassuring Americans that there won't be a conflict of interest between his businesses and his political administration.
"Yes, we knew from the beginning that he was going to turn his business interests over to his children," Cardona said. "But guess what? His daughter has been in meetings with prime ministers, with presidents, and with business people from across the world."
After Keilar tried to compare the Clinton Foundation scandal with Trump remaining involved with his businesses, Cardona wasn't having it. "Can you imagine if Hillary Clinton had won and if Chelsea Clinton was with her at every single meeting that she was having as they were putting the transition in place?"
She added, "Oh my god, there would be hearings! There would be Fox News specials! There would be an independent prosecutor! It’s ridiculous the kind of hypocrisy that is happening."
