CNN's Ana Cabrera on Friday cornered Sen. Ron Johnson (R-WI) over President Donald Trump's latest attacks on the Department of Justice for not doing enough to go after his political rivals.
During a contentious interview, Cabrera asked Johnson if it was really appropriate for the president to threaten to interfere with DOJ operations so that prosecutors would start going after Hillary Clinton and other Democrats.
"Are you okay with this president directing the DOJ, in their investigations, telling the DOJ to go after his political adversaries?" she asked. "Is this supposed to happen in America?"
Johnson responded by insisting that there was a "two-tiered" justice system in the United States that benefited people like Hillary Clinton who were "well connected," while people like President Donald Trump and his longtime associates were somehow treated unfairly.
Cabrera then dropped the hammer on Johnson and pointed out that it was Attorney General Jeff Sessions who implied that the president was improperly trying to turn the DOJ into a vehicle he could use to attack his political foes.
"Let me remind you what the attorney general said last week as the president started this attack on the Justice Department and specifically pointed the finger at Jeff Sessions, saying he wasn't doing the job he was put in place to do," she said. "The attorney general responded with, "While I am attorney general, the actions of the Department of Justice won't be improperly influenced by political considerations."
Johnson could only respond by pivoting back to paying tribute to the late Sen. John McCain.
