In an Ohio speech on Monday, President Donald Trump appeared to allude to Democrats when he asked why he can't use the word "treason" to refer to left-wing State of the Union attendees who refused to clap for him when he mentioned low black and Hispanic unemployment.
CNN political commentator Angela Rye, however, noted that she doesn't believe Trump's "treasonous" comments were directed at all Democrats, but rather at members of the Congressional Black Caucus.
"He was talking about a certain segment of the group — they happened to be adorned in kente cloth and Reesie Taylor pins that day," she said, alluding to the CBC.
Host Anderson Cooper asked Rob Astorino, a one-time GOP gubernatorial candidate from New York, if he thinks all Democrats are treasonous, to which he gave a qualified "no."
"That kind of rhetoric is crazy," Astorino said. "It's just as crazy for [California Democratic congresswoman] Maxine Waters for her to go on her rants half the time, talking about the president and 'he needs to be impeached.'"
Rye took issue with the former candidate's characterization.
"That is my mentor and you will not disrespect her in that way," she said. "Ever."
Cooper then came to Astorino's defense.
"What Rob was saying is that it wasn't helpful for the president to call Democrats treasonous," he said, "just as rhetoric on the other side talking about impeachment is not necessarily helpful."
"It may not be helpful, Anderson, but the reality of it is there are a number of people who have called into looking into impeachment," Rye rebutted.
"Every time 'Twitter thumbs' picks his account back up and opens it up and says something else, he is the one that proves the reason why folks are looking into this, that's not on Congresswoman Waters," she said. "I think it's also time for us to stop with the false equivalency."
