CNN’s Dana Bash laughs in Mike Pence’s face when he tries to package Trump as ‘humble’ statesman

Mike Pence, the virulently anti-LGBT Republican governor of Indiana and running mate to GOP presidential nominee Donald Trump tried to tell Dana Bash of CNN that Trump is like former Pres. Ronald Reagan in that he has a "core of humility."

Pence spoke at the Reagan Presidential Library in California on Thursday, giving a speech in which he tried to compare his former reality TV star running mate to Reagan, who was U.S. president from 1980 to 1988.

"You talked about [Reagan] being humble," Bash said in a conversation after Pence's speech, "and I know you talk about that on the campaign trail as well. And you do it as you compare him to Donald Trump. I think that even Donald Trump would say that there are a lot of things that you can say about him. 'Humble' is probably not one of them."

"Both men were very broad-shouldered leaders," Pence enthused. "Both men have been successful not only in public -- "

"But, 'humble?'" interrupted Bash. "A guy who has his name on every building he made?"

"Well, he's also an entertainer," Pence said. "Ronald Reagan had his name on a lot of marquees."

Reagan was a B-movie actor before becoming active in California Republican politics. His features included the biopic Knute Rockne: All American, Dark Victory and Bedtime for Bonzo -- in which Reagan acted alongside a trained chimpanzee.

"I think at their very core, both men are the kind of leaders that have a core of humility," Pence said.
